Getting Started with Facebook Advertising
Now that we’ve covered the basics of Facebook advertising, let’s get started with your first campaign. The first step is to create a new ad campaign in the Ads Manager. You can create a new campaign by clicking the green “Create Campaign” button in the top left corner of the screen:
Once you’ve created a campaign, you’ll need to choose a goal for your ad. There are three options:
1) Reach people near your business
2) Get people to visit your website or app
3) Increase conversions on your website
Now it is very necessary to have an expert who guides you throughout about statistical data-driven modeling techniques where various procedures are followed through math before finalizing on the specs.
After you’ve chosen a goal, the next step is to create your ad. This is where you’ll choose your target audience, budget, and other settings for your campaign.
There are two types of Facebook ads:
1) Sponsored Posts
These are posts from your business page that will appear in the News Feeds of your fans and their friends. You can also create Sponsored Posts that will show up in the right sidebar of your page, but these are less valuable because they don’t appear to all users by default.
2) Marketplace Ads
These are ads for products you’re selling directly from Facebook. When someone clicks on your ad to learn more about one of these products, they go directly to the product detail view within Marketplace (you may need to click “See More” if it doesn’t load automatically). 3) Custom & Lookalike Audiences – Custom & Lookalike audiences allow you to target people who have already visited your website or app instead of targeting whole demographics or geographies. This is probably the most effective type of Facebook targeting and is something we’ll cover in more detail below.

For the rest of this guide, we’ll be using the example of a business that wants to increase website traffic from people who live in the United States.
Getting started with your first ad
1) Choose your target audience – The first step is to choose your target audience. You can target people by location, demographics (age, gender, relationship status, job title, etc.), interests, or behaviors. In our example, we want to target people living in the United States, so we’ll use “United States” as our location and leave the other options blank. We’ll be targeting people who are interested in business, so we select “Interests > Business & Industrial” from the dropdown menu. Finally, you have the option of adding additional filters to narrow down your audience further. We don’t want to exclude any users with this campaign, so we’ll leave these blank too.
2) Set your daily budget – Next up is setting your daily budget for your ad campaign. You can set a weekly or lifetime budget instead if you prefer. Facebook automatically displays the estimated number of conversions per day based on how much you’re willing to spend each day:
3) Pick a start and end date – You can pick a start and end date for your ad, or let it run indefinitely if you prefer. Once you have all that set up, hit “Continue” to move on to the next tab.
4) Write your ad copy – This is your ad’s headline. Use this space to succinctly describe what you’re advertising.
5) Upload an image – Facebook recommends using images with at least 1200 x 630 pixels because they’ll appear larger in News Feeds. You can upload photos straight from your computer here or use one of Facebook’s stock images by clicking any of the options under “Design Assets.”
6) Optimize your bid strategy – The first option is “Manual CPM” which means you pay for every 1,000 impressions. The second is “Optimized CPM” which uses Facebook’s algorithm to automatically optimize the amount you’re willing to pay per 1,000 impressions. You can also use target cost-per-acquisition (CPA) bidding here, which will allow you to choose a target CPA and let Facebook automatically adjust your bids accordingly.
7) Review your ad – Double-check all of the information above before submitting your ad request. Once everything looks good, hit “Place Order” in the top right corner to submit it for review by one of Facebook’s approval moderators.
8) Keep creating ads until you have enough data – Facebook will start serving your ad as soon as it’s approved, but you won’t have any data to analyze until people start clicking on it. Keep creating ads until you have a statistically significant amount of data (at least 100 clicks) then use the Facebook Ads Manager to analyze that data and figure out what’s working and what isn’t.
Now that you understand the basics of how Facebook advertising works, let’s take a look at some of the more advanced targeting options available.
Custom audiences are also known as “Lookalike Audiences.” Custom and lookalike audiences allow you to target individuals who have previously visited your website or app rather than entire demographics or geographies. To build a custom audience, upload your customer list or email subscribers into Facebook’s ad platform. You may also convert an existing custom audience using the Facebook pixel on your website. Simply give it a name and hit “Create Audience” to make it a Custom Audiences targeting option.
You can then choose how closely they should match people in your custom audience by selecting either “Exact Match” or “Fuzzy Matching:”
If you go with an exact match, they must be an exact match of users who fit your custom audience so there’s less chance of ads being shown to users who don’t exactly fit the target demographic. For example, if I uploaded emails from people
